The makers had a rule, written for cars, phones, and tractors: if you can't open it, you don't own it. It now applies to the most important tool you will ever use. Your AI.

I learned this the hard way. I build with AI every day, and I pay for it. Then the answers got worse. Quietly throttled, no notice, same price. Then access was blocked outright, denied by a usage term buried in the fine print. And when I tried to take my work and leave, there was no way to get it out. That is when it landed. I had no control over the tool I relied on most. I was not a customer. I was a tenant.
